Trompe l'oeil Powder Room • Faux paneling, latticework, and plant life.
The painting of faux paneling, latticework, and plant life brought this boring little powder room to life in the historic home created by Mary Louise Curtis Bok in Rockport, Maine.

Norwich, Vermont - Classic Farmhouse Rethought
With a beautiful play of color and finishes this farmhouse redo really had all of the finishing touches. Reclaimed flooring with an overscale and transparent green glazed checkerboard and multi-color rub off finish cabinet finishes were classic country in feel with a touch of sophistication the client desired.

Pool House Game Room
This over the top pool house leads out to an in ground pool that meets the Atlantic Ocean head in. Unfortunately the game room in the house lacked the punch it needed to stand up to the rest of it so using a trompe l'oeil paneling and a great color we transformed the space completely!
Pool House Game Room
This client needed a higher level of rendering to understand what exactly would happen in their space and this image and a large scale color sample built the trust needed to move forward.
Pool House Game Room
Originally wanting a blue color way I thought a classic deep green would add interest and tie nicely with the beautiful deep Blue kitchen cabinetry in the adding room.
Pool House Game Room
The illusion complete and the fun aspect of this technique is the walls are perfectly smooth adding lots of great conversations when guests realize what they are looking at.

Federal Period Faux Marble Floor
The Kavanaugh House in Newcastle, Maine was built during the Federal Period in 1803 by James Kavanaugh, a renowned shipbuilder and successful businessman. The new owners love of history inspired them into restoring the 14+ room home starting with the modern living quarters where we did a variation of a faux marble checkerboard floor in the Federal Period Style.

Brimmer Street - Boston, Mass.
The complete renovation of the Admiral Byrd home on Brimmer Street meant a complete redo of the 5 story spiral staircase including a shimmering pearlescent French Brush technique with custom made stencil design.

Masterbath Linen Cabinet
Also as part of the Admiral Byrd house renovation in Boston I worked with cabinet makers to design many furniture pieces like this. This one receiving a beautiful tongue oil finish with raised plaster door designs that were gilt and painted.
Checkerboard Floor Variation
Hand Painted in the clients favorite blue palette this entry hall floor is a stunning was to come into this coastal Rockport, Maine home. A checkerboard pattern is always in style and adding a bit of detail and a defined border creates the formality this floor deserved.

Trompe l'oeil Wainscot Panels
We brought back much needed formality to this repurposed 1850’s Baptist Church in Rockport, Maine not by adding real wood but by “fooling the eye” with hand painted wainscot panels.
This use of traditional trompe l’oeil painting adds a wonderful sense of painted finishes and leads from the dining room into the great room and our incredible mural which can be seen on the mural link.

Gilt and Hand-painted Landscape Shaped Headboard - Midcoast, Maine
This 12’ wide shaped “Headboard” painting was created to anchor the bed to the scale of the bedroom. Gold metallic leaf was used as a base and a combination of acrylic and metallic pigments allow for light to sweep over the work as the sun passes from sunrise to sunset. The scene contains a sunrise on the left and a “MoonShadow” night on the right as scene from the back of this property overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A Moroccon inspired frame was created to contain the 5 panels and merge the clients aesthetics in this 10 month Covid Year Collaboration.

Pascal Hall Mural
This was also commissioned for Pascal Hall in Rockport, Maine and involves a 16’ x 31’ mural including trompe l'oeil wainscot and frame to complete the illusion of a large history painting like you may see in the National Gallery. The imagery involves a number of historic passages from Rockport Harbors past and I was inspired by Art at The Farnsworth in Rockland, Maine, particularly NC Wyeth in my final composition.

Using William Morris as inspiration again in this 1929 lakehouse we created another raised plaster and hand-painted design that was a bit more contemporary in feel than the connector hall we did last year. Brighter hues and over-scaled designs made for an elegant and welcoming entrance that still fit this homes classic character.

I love that interior designer Cicely Beston was not shy in placing a mirror on our new walls! Layering only adds interest and completes the space.
Hand Painted Sisal
My favorite Islesboro, Maine client is definitely old school and much of what I do for his historic island home is recreating old treasures that he cannot live without. Two old sisal rugs were damaged due to water so I recreated them on synthetic sisal, and updated the color way to work with new fabrics that the designer had selected.

Trompe l'oeil paneled dining room
Hand Painted trompe l'oeil panels in Islesboro, ME estate dining room with Three Color Strie’ Glazed trim. This room was originally appointed by the London design team from Colefax and Fowler back in the early 1980’s. The act of closing and opening up the island home every year eventually led to crumbling plaster and a room in disrepair.
That is when my client asked we make it like it was! All the hand-painted mural paper was removed and walls were repaired and relined with a new synthetic canvas that will help withstand the islands brutal conditions. Before this I created “cartoons” of each panel and practiced to recreate the original hand of the amazing decorative artists that made this gem.

Porch Entry Desk at The Hichborn - Stockton Springs, ME
The antique entry check-in desk was refinished with the same finish as on the new bar inside but a raised plaster motif was added to reinforce the restaurants branding.
Gilded Bar Finish at The Hichborn - Stockton Springs, ME
This seven layer glazed and rubbed back copper finish is truly elegant and timeless. The slate top from the quarries in Monmouth, ME make this project extra special and worth seeing in person!

Again, using the motif but this time in different sizes and colors to create an elegant and whimsical floor finish.

The wall color was chosen to relate to the restaurant interior and is a great backdrop for the local Art the restaurant showcases.
Raised plaster bookshelf backers
These Art collectors were sprucing up an office and wanted the bookshelves to be Art themselves surrounding this lovely and color filled Henry Isaacs painting.
I used a raised plaster technique with a custom made pine and red maple design, based on the traditional European sample seen here and a color palette to complement the Art and the room itself.

Whimsical Lakeside Cottage
One of many things we created in this incredible project was this croquet inspired stairway that the designer dreamed up and we made reality. This 1940’s cottager was totally brought down to the studs and made new but we brought back the character the client desired and then some.
Hand painted porch floor
Also at the Megunticook cottage we painted EVERY floor a special design, all based on old quilt patterns. The classic “camp” greens made this wrap around porch come to life for the water side living.

Flying Geese bathroom floor
Not only did we create this contemporary flying geese pattern floor on reclaimed wood but aged and distressed the whole room, of all new construction, so that it had the look as if it had always been there, including hand stenciled doors for the built in cabinet.

Painted pantry and floor
This old milk house in Thetford, Vermont was completely redone and that included a subtle checkborard glazed floor design, allowing the woodgrain to show through as well as a custom cabinet/pantry painted with images from old family photos of the farm.
Early American Vanity
In Lyme, NH this reinvested bath included a vanity I designed to appear like an old chest that we then hand painted in the vinegar grain style like 19th century American furniture.

Home Bar Details
Instead of just paint we used actual branches to detail this unique bar in a bespoke Northern Vermont home.

Fantasy Grained Armoire
Collaborated with a Vermont cabinet maker to create the classic armoire with a fantasy grained finish. Finding the perfect custom hardware finished the piece to perfection!
Tin Punch Built-ins
Giving this open concept Vermont renovation extra storage meant creating “closets” that appeared as furniture. We created a distressed paint finish and punched the tin ourselves to make something special.
